An old Japanese salaryman comes to terms with losing most of his possessions to the debt collectors. A 19th-century Italian poet writes an epic poem as he climbs a volcano during a heavy storm. Two seemingly different characters, from different times and places, connected by the same nostalgia for a time of innocence.
